The Boomerang Hypothesis

I am a firm believer that some things never really go away. Thoughts, deeds..... just things in general. No matter how hard you try to get rid of them they just keep coming back in one form or another. And when they come back in the same form that they left in it can be kind of freaky. In your face kind of freaky. Today a prime example of my boomerang hypothesis occurred. I went to a fashion show at my church. I took an elderly friend with me. During an intermission in the show there were drawings for door prizes. The models were each given several prizes to hand out to the winners. There was a friendly competition between the models to see who could hand out their prizes first. All of the prizes were wrapped beautifully so no one knew what they were given until the packages were opened. My friend happened to win a door prize. A model approached her and offered her a choice of three gifts. She selected a pretty little package and proceeded to unwrap it. I was excited for her. At one point she started to laugh very softly and then stopped halfway through the unwrapping process, unable (or not wanting) to finish. In her hands was the same little serving tray (or one identical to it) that she had just given away to the church resale shop a few days before. You see, she is preparing to move back North to be closer to her children and she had been cleaning out things that she thought she no longer needed. She confided that she had had the tray for several years and had never used it. It was still in the original box. She finally decided to give it away and now, here it was, back in her hands. She had had a choice of three gifts and she chose the very one that she didn't want. How is it that the model who handed my friend that gift just happened to get to her before any other model? Coincidence? No. I think it's the boomerang hypothesis in action. Some things just come back. No explanation needed. I've never done any scientific study on this phenomenon. It's just a belief I have developed over a period of time. It's not a theory. It's not a law. It is just an observation based on repetition. I don't think it's a coincidence. I'm not a great believer in coincidence. I like the word hypothesis, though. And boomerang!
