the woodcarver

Dan is 97 years old.  For years he has been working with wood, hand carving fabulous toys, boxes, lamp bases, frames and such.  His work is intricate with lots of filigree and fine detailing.  I had the pleasure of seeing his work the other day and it is amazing.  His carved wood projects are in every room of his house.  Just when you think you have seen it all, another piece catches your eye.  One of his biggest pieces is a fully working ferris wheel.  The sides are finely cut in an airy pattern and the seats move with the turning of the wheel.  He has also made musical instruments (all tuned correctly) and they are ready for use.  His house looks like a wood carvers museum.  The garage was set up with his work bench and all his tools.  He has enjoyed his days creating wooden objects and, although he is not working at his craft these days, he takes pride in the work he has done.  Rightfully so!  His advice to anyone interested in working with wood is "Start with the finest wood you can get. Always use the best."  Words of wisdom for all of us.  "Always use (do) the best".
