humming in church
Yesterday was communion Sunday. Some churches serve communion while the parishioners are seated in the pews. Sometimes the parishioners come forth to the alter to receive the communion elements. Communion was served in this manner at the church I attended yesterday. I takes a little longer to serve communion to the entire congregation this way but it also gives the pianist a longer time to softly play hymns during this portion of the service. I like this very much. It gives me an opportunity to quietly enjoy the music. In the beginning there was just the sound of the piano playing but as the service continued I noticed a soft humming coming from the congregation. The hymns were so familiar that people were humming the music as it was being played. I found myself humming along, too. (church hymns are some of my favorite music) Towards the end of the service I could hear that the humming had evolved into very gentle singing. We all knew the words and it was an obvious morph from the near silent humming into the near silent singing. It seemed as if everyone was drawing strength from each other. I loved it...drawing strength from each other. And, it all started with the humming.
