Exodus 19:1 Through Exodus 30:11
Oh, my! How many times can the word cubit be used in scripture? Many, many times I assure you. The passages I read mostly dealt with Moses going up to Mt. Sinai and speaking with the Lord. It was at this time that Moses was given the ten commandments and he recorded them and brought them down the mountain to his people. And then there were all the laws. Laws, laws, laws and more laws. What to eat and what not to eat. What to wear. Who is worthy to live. The basic pecking order of society. Everything. And it was explained VERY explicitly. My head was exploding. But I kept reading. The instructions for building the Ark of the Covenant came next. These instructions were also very explicit. And this is where all the cubits come in. Each measurement was precise. (I wouldn't expect anything less from God) So many rings cast in gold and wooden staves clad in gold and the carved winged cherubs covered in gold. And all were given their special place on the Ark. And then came the instructions for building the Tabernacle. Again with the cubits and gold! And now fabric was added for the coverings...the finest of linen. Blue, purple and scarlet were the chosen colors and each curtain had fifty loops and a very specific border pattern was explained in detail. The alter was described with all the pots and utensils and their placement. And jewels were added. The jewels were arranged in rows in a very specific order. After the tabernacle was built the garments for the priest and his sons were made according to the instructions. Aaron and his sons were given their duties and these duties were to be passed on to their sons and their sons and ... Then the sacrifices were described in detail. Rams and lambs were chosen for the sacrifices but only certain parts of these animals were considered worthy of sacrifice. And finally the instructions for the holidays were given. Three holidays. The beginning of planting, the end of harvest and one to honor God. Enter the bread and incense. Everything (EVERYTHING) associated with the Ark and the Tabernacle and the priests garments was pure and precise by their descriptions. My head was still spinning with all the cubits and golden rings and unleavened bread and now the incense. I was lost in all the words and it surprised me when I was told I had been reading aloud for over an hour. I stopped reading, pointed to the next passage and stepped away from the Bible. I was elated. Lifted in spirit. I felt wonderful. It was 3 a.m. and I wanted more. I'll be back tomorrow morning. I am curious what I will be reading. I'll tell you later.
