Near Miss Ice Cream Disaster
I was in Publix grocery store last evening just cruising around looking for all the coupon specials and advantage buys, just trying to save some money. As I was nearing the far wall where all the glass door cases filled with rows and rows of ice cream are located I noticed an unusually high amount of frenzied activity. What??? Was there a secret, special sale on ice cream that I didn't know about. I aim my grocery cart very carefully around all of these bumper to bumper g-carts being loaded with ice cream. All flavors. Yum. Gallon containers. Yummy yum. Novelties of all kinds. Oh, heavenly yum. And sherbet, too! mmmmm. Can it be? Is there a huge birthday party going on somewhere and they forgot the ice cream? The stock boys were working feverishly placing pints and half gallons and super tubs of the most wonderful frozen dessert on earth into the carts. The premium brands, the store brands, even the out-of-my-price-range, super specialty brands. My mouth was watering. I was licking my lips. I had to know. "Where is the ice cream going?", I ask. "It's going into a freezer in the storage room. The thermostat for the ice cream display cases is malfunctioning and we need to save the ice cream before it melts." SAVE THE ICE CREAM!!! Oh, horrors, the ice cream is on the brink of melting! I shudder. Can this be? I rolled up my sleeves, volunteering to help. But, alas, (oh, joy) another contingent of stock boys arrived with another fleet of carts, some of them probably commandeered from unsuspecting costumers. One heroic guy was pushing a whole train of carts locked together, obviously brought in from the parking lot. All of the excitement wore me out. But I was not alone. For as I was visually locked into the sight of flying ice cream boxes, I failed to notice the crowd of mesmerized customers standing behind me, eyes locked in a trance-like gaze at the dramatic sight. We were together. Ice cream lovers. United. And the ice cream was saved. I slowly moved down the isle past the now empty ice cream cases. Still shaken. A near miss meltdown. A potential ice cream disaster averted. Props to the stock boys.
